We loved creating the sound of renegade robots, intricate internal machinery and the charging of laser weapons for another brilliant film by Fat Rat for Amnesty International. The films produced were used across Amnesty’s social channels and at in person meetings.
Subsequent media coverage has added to the Stop Killer Robots Campaign - a consortium of over 180 organisations battling the unregulated spread of Lethal Autonomous Weapon Systems, or LAWS.
Unlike existing semi-autonomous weapons such as drones, fully-autonomous weapons have no human-operated “kill switch” and instead leave decisions over life and death to sensors, software and machine processes. Automation replaces human decision making in places where it should be most present, like conflict zones, border control and policing.
Using LAWS raise the risks for civilians, pose problems for accountability and increase the chances of conflict escalation.
Amnesty & SKR state, "We call on government leaders around the world to launch negotiations for new international law on autonomy in weapons systems - to ensure human control in the use of force and to prohibit machines that target people, reducing us to objects, stereotypes, and data points."
